Peter Viggo Jakobsen, Defence Academy on Geopolitics and Business

75 members of Aalborg Maritime & Logistics took part in a highly relevant and engaging event with the above title. At a breathtaking pace, Peter Viggo Jakobsen addressed the geopolitical consequences of Trump’s unpredictability, the war in Ukraine, the power play between Russia, China, India and the United States, the conflict surrounding Greenland, trade policy, and much, much more.

It would go too far to recount all the key messages, but some of the main takeaways included:

  • The EU is just as strong as – or stronger than – the United States when it comes to trade relations
  • The penny has finally dropped across Europe (in relation to Greenland) – enough is enough
  • If Greenland were taken by force, NATO would be finished. The US would not be expelled, but would be phased out over 5–10 years
  • Will the United States exist as we have known it in 25 years? No – not if the current development continues
  • We must stop buying more hardware and equipment from the United States
  • We are back in a Cold War situation, where Europe must itself produce all strategically important goods: IT, AI, the green transition, weapons, medicine, and the like
  • India looks after its own interests and wants to be on good terms with everyone
  • The situation in the US looks bleak, but it did in the 1960s as well, with assassinations of presidents and other leaders. We can only hope they find their way through it again
  • We must continue to influence American society at all levels, in the hope that change will come from within
  • We must continue to support Ukraine, which will need to be rebuilt and eventually become part of the EU once corruption has been eliminated
  • The conflict is likely to end with a “new Korea” in Ukraine, with a monitored dividing line/border

Thank you to Peter Viggo Jakobsen for an inspiring and thought-provoking afternoon.
